Though appearing as a water colour style image, this piece was actually created with gouache paint. We were to find an image and replicate it perfectly utilizing the square grid technique. Square by square, you begin to see an image form, right down to hue, value and chroma. It was up to the artist to decide on whether they would leave the white grid lines to show through the chosen image, or to have them completely dissolve. I thought it would be interesting to reveal a small portion of the grid. In doing this I could create a sense of depth and dimension with the girl’s facial features. This was most definitely a challenging piece to perfect, as every water droplet, hair strand, shadow and highlight needed to be both placed and coloured exactly.
